Cream diamond medallions and flowering sprays form a delightful pattern on the deep red field. Over a deep red field, a chain of cream diamond medallions with near-black cores runs down the center, touched with teal and pink. Delicate flowering sprays in near-black, cream and pink stand on either side of the chain. At the corners, spandrels on a near-black ground hold small flowers and geometric motifs. A wide cream border carries hooked tan and brown forms. Narrow red guard stripes with small pink and cream blossoms frame it on both sides. The pile is full. The warm red and cool teal notes stretch out in a line along a hall. At 3'5" by 9'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner follows that long format. A chain of diamond medallions and a wide cream border with hooked forms give it a clear structure, and the red field holds cream and near-black accents.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
