About this rug

Boteh and small geometric motifs make this a wonderful rug. Small geometric motifs and boteh fill the deep red field in a dense, repeating lattice of cream, brown and touches of blue. A single cream diamond medallion with a serrated edge sits at the center, holding a small cluster of red and brown shapes. Large cream spandrels anchor the four corners, each filled with stepped geometric forms and separated from the field by a jagged line. The beautiful main border is dark brown, carrying a chain of dainty stylized rosettes and leaves in red and pale blue. Narrow guard stripes in red and cream frame this dark band on either side. Full pile covers the field and the borders, keeping the drawing sharp. The cream corners interrupt the long stretch of red along this narrow format. At 3'7" by 9'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that long format, with a single diamond medallion and large corner spandrels organizing the busy field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
