Four black hexagonal shapes, each holding a stylized tree, make this a wonderful rug. Set within a deep red field, four black hexagonal shapes run down the center, each holding a stylized tree with lovely pink blossoms. Small animals, birds and flowering trees in tan, cream and pink fill the open red ground between the hexagons. The main border is near-black, carrying birds and rosettes in red, tan and cream. Narrow guard stripes in red and cream line the border, each set with a small zigzag pattern. Full pile covers the field and the border, keeping the drawing sharp and the colors distinct. The near-black border frames the bright red center, making a bold graphic line down a hall. At 3'5" by 9'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
A shrine in Hamedan long called the tomb of Esther is, by Britannica’s account, the tomb of Queen Shushandukht, wife of the Sasanian king Yazdegerd I. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that narrow shape, with a warm red field inside a near-black frame. Four hexagons run down the length, each holding a tree, with animals and birds on the open red ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
