About this rug

This remarkable rug carries a large cream diamond medallion at the middle. Worked on a deep red field, pretty cream vines and small rosettes in green and blue fill the length. A large cream diamond medallion anchors the middle, holding red and brown floral motifs and extending pendants up and down. Handsome cream spandrels fill the corners at both ends. The main border is a dusty blue gray, set with small cream motifs. Narrow guard stripes edge the border on each side. Full pile covers the face, keeping every color distinct. It holds the eye down a long hall, where the cream notes brighten the warm red ground. At 2'5" by 8'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. A single cream medallion sits on the deep red field, with cream spandrels at the ends, framed by a blue gray border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
