About this rug

Hexagonal medallions line the length of this charming rug. The deep red field holds small hooked motifs and geometric flowers in navy and cream. A column of splendid hexagonal medallions runs down the center, each holding rosettes and stepped shapes within serrated edges. The medallions shift between grounds of cream, salmon, steel blue and navy. A main border carries a repeat of small geometric blossoms and crosses. Narrow guard stripes frame the border on both sides. Pale flecks of foundation show where the pile runs low along the length. It grounds a passage with its strong red rhythm and the cool notes of blue inside the hexagons. At 2'4" by 9'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. They spent the winter near sea level on the Moghan steppe and the summer about 160 kilometers south, in the high pastures of the Savalan range. Persian Azerbaijan covers the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions that share a vocabulary: angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. This runner keeps that vocabulary in its column of hexagonal medallions and the hooked shapes scattered across the red ground. Cream and olive pick out the details inside each hexagon.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
