About this rug

The deep red field of this remarkable rug holds a column of stepped diamond medallions. Across a deep red field, a column of stepped diamond medallions runs the length of the runner. Each diamond holds a charming geometric rosette in cream, teal and burgundy, outlined in blue, with small pendants linking one to the next. Dark navy triangles fill the spaces between the diamonds along both sides. A salmon pink stepped band edges the field, and a narrow cream border of small zigzag figures closes the rug. The pile is full across the face. It brings a strong line of madder red and dark blue down a passage. At 2' by 9'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Songhor rugs

Songhor lies in Kermanshah province in western Persia, Kurdish weaving country. Kermanshah, the city that gives Songhor’s province its name, was founded in the 4th century by the Sasanian king Bahram IV. Older Kurdish rugs of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, among them garden carpets and the harshang design, are known for their exuberant colors. Songhor rugs are geometric, with strong madder reds and deep blues. This runner keeps that geometry and the strong red ground, set against the dark blue of the corner triangles. The stepped outline of every diamond and the hooked motifs in the field match the tribal character of the region.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
