About this rug

A column of stepped medallions runs down this remarkable runner. Over a deep red field, a column of stepped medallions runs down the whole runner, large ones outlined in ivory alternating with smaller brown ones. Hooked ivory arms reach out from the large medallions, and cores of tan, teal and rose sit inside. Small hooked and cross-shaped figures fill the spaces between. The splendid main border is dark brown, carrying small tan, teal and red motifs. A narrow dotted band and a red stripe run inside the border. The pile is full across the field. The strong red ground keeps the geometric drawing clear across this narrow runner. At 1'10" by 8'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gharajeh rugs

The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. North of Heriz in northwestern Persia lies the village district of Gharajeh, also written Karaja. The district’s signature is a column of separate medallions running down a narrow field, instead of one centered medallion. The layout suits long formats, so Gharajeh runners are what the district is known for. This runner keeps that column, with large ivory-edged medallions alternating with smaller brown ones on the red. Its brown border closes the field with a band of small tan and teal motifs.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
