About this rug

A column of hexagons and stepped crosses runs down the center of this charming rug. Small geometric flowers and hooked shapes in pink, sage and gold crowd the burgundy field. A column of separate medallions runs down the center, alternating hexagons with near-black cores and stepped crosses in pink and tan. Slate blue edges a few of the hexagons. The drawing runs out to a plain red selvedge, with no border or corner pieces. Pile thins in patches along the column, where pale specks of the foundation appear. It forms a strong red line down a passage, with slate blue touches cooling the warm field. At 1'10" by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gharajeh rugs

The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. North of Heriz in northwestern Persia lies the village district of Gharajeh, also written Karaja. The district’s signature is a column of separate medallions running down a narrow field instead of one centered medallion. The layout suits long formats, so Gharajeh runners are what the district is known for. This runner keeps that column, with hexagons and stepped crosses taking turns down the length. The burgundy ground ties the pink, sage and gold drawing together.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
