About this rug

Stepped medallions run in a column through this lovely rug. A deep red field carries a column of handsome stepped medallions in blue and brown, the upper and lower ones holding a small salmon square with a tiny figure inside. The middle one holds a red rosette. Small brown stags and birds stand in the red ground between the medallions. A near-black line outlines the field, and brown corner panels at each end hold small blue birds and red sprays. The main border is narrow and near-black, with a thin blue guard stripe. The pile is full over the red field, with a few small low spots on the blue medallions. Blue medallions divide the long red ground, fitting a tight corridor. At 1'10" by 8'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. This one is long and geometric, with stepped medallions, small stags and birds. The blue medallions and brown ends set off the red along the full length.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
