About this rug

Stepped diamond medallions in a burgundy field make this a charming rug. A column of splendid stepped diamond medallions runs down the burgundy field, each framed in crimson red bands with a navy stepped edge. Every medallion has a core of teal, brown, blue and pink rings, and a pale pink and peach zigzag outlines it. The triangles between the diamonds and the long edges hold small lozenges in teal, pink and violet. A thin navy line closes each long edge. Pile has thinned in scattered spots along the length, where white specks of foundation show. It holds a strong red line down a narrow space, the teal and navy accents cooling it. At 1'8" by 7'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner has that long narrow format, with stepped diamonds stacked down its length. Crimson red bands and navy edges stand out against the burgundy field, with small touches of teal and pink inside each shape.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
