Dusty rose boteh repeat along the length of this delightful rug. The deep red field holds rows of dusty rose boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, with small teal and navy notes. There is no central medallion, only the steady repeat of the leaf shapes along the full length of the runner. The narrow main border has an ivory ground carrying a navy zigzag. Narrow guard stripes in gold and blue gray edge it on either side. The dense drawing holds the red and rose together without letting the pattern blur. At 2'2" by 11'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
Medallion carpet designs of the 16th century are usually associated with Tabriz, then the Safavid capital and the seat of the royal design workshops. A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. This runner keeps that discipline in its straight borders and the steady repeat of the field. A small teal mark sits in each leaf shape, and the dusty rose carries the pattern against the red.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
