A dense lattice of rust and tan motifs repeats down this wonderful rug. Across a dark brown field, a gorgeous dense lattice of rust and tan motifs repeats down the length. No single medallion anchors the design; instead, small flowers, hooked leaves and diamond forms fill the ground in an all-over pattern. Accents of gray brown and pale teal sit within the rust forms. The pile is short and level along the whole length. It holds a warm, earthy tone in a narrow passage, the rust notes lifting the dark ground. At 2'5" by 12'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Birjand rugs
The Textile Museum in Washington names Sabzevar, Herat, Mashhad and Dorokhsh among the Khorasan cities cited as sources of fine carpets. Khorasan has its classic carpets in those of Herat, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The main weaving town of South Khorasan in eastern Persia is Birjand, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. Birjand rugs usually show a repeating floral lattice or a centered medallion in curved lines, in madder, ivory and deep blue. This runner keeps the repeating lattice, worked in angular flowers and hooked leaves rather than soft curves. Dark brown, rust and tan take the place of madder, ivory and blue in the palette.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
