This lovely runner frames a plain burgundy field with a border of scrolling palmettes in tan. At the center, a plain burgundy field stretches the length of the runner without a medallion or corner pieces to break the expanse. A border of graceful scrolling palmettes in tan with brown outlines runs down both sides and across each end, set directly on the burgundy ground. Along the field, the pile has worn low in patches and the weave shows through. The burgundy lets the tan scrolls stand out in a narrow passage. At 2'4" by 10'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Borders that turn cleanly at the corners and vine scrolls planned in full before weaving began are the marks of Tabriz work. On this runner, the tan scrolls turn cleanly at the corners and run down both long sides. The burgundy field stays open and plain between them.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
