Rows of stepped octagonal guls cover the burgundy field of this wonderful rug. Over a burgundy field, rows of handsome stepped octagonal guls repeat in cream and brown, with small crosses between them. The field is an all-over repeat with no central medallion. A beautiful deep red main border carries rows of small diamonds in cream, brown and near-black. Narrow bands of small zigzags in near-black and cream edge the field on both sides. The pile is full from edge to edge. It anchors a narrow passage, the steady burgundy ground carrying the bright cream figures. At 2'9" by 9'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Turkmen women wove the furnishings of the tent: carpets for floors and entryways, and smaller pieces made into bags and animal trappings. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This runner keeps that grid of guls down its length. The burgundy ground holds the cream and brown figures, with small crosses in the spaces between.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
