A column of octagonal gul motifs runs the length of this charming rug. Set in a deep red field, a column of beautiful octagonal gul motifs runs the length of the runner, each holding cream and near-black forms. Small stepped figures in near-black and cream flank the central column. The main border is deep red, carrying square panels with starburst emblems in cream and near-black, framed by narrow guard stripes of near-black zigzags and small cream diamonds. Pile runs low in spots across the field, and white foundation specks show through in places. The steady red and near-black tones suit a narrow passage. At 3'2" by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
The Salor, Tekke, Yomut and Ersari tribes each wove a recognizable variety of the Turkmen design. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, and it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This runner keeps that strict grid of octagonal figures down its length. The red ground holds the cream and near-black forms inside each repeated shape.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
