About this rug

Five stepped medallions in a column make this a lovely rug. The deep red field holds a column of five stepped medallions framed in blue-gray. The first, third and fifth have cream cores, and the others have red ones. Each core holds a small flower or rosette. Stepped blue-gray pieces link the medallions down the length. A handsome cream main border carries red and blue figures, edged by thin guard stripes of small checks and triangles. The pile is worn low across much of the face, and the foundation shows through, most of all on the left side. Blue-gray frames break up the long red ground, and the runner fits a narrow passage. At 3'5" by 10'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. After an earthquake damaged the shrine it was sold to a Manchester firm, and the Victoria and Albert Museum bought it in 1893. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Runners and long formats are common. This runner keeps that firm geometry, with stepped medallions stacked down the length and hard contrast between the red field and the blue-gray frames. The drawing stays angular throughout, from the notched medallion edges to the small checks in the guard stripes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
