About this rug

Gray cartouches on the terracotta main border make this an amazing rug. Deep red carries the field, broken by a column of camel panels holding stars and quartered roundels in red, violet and cream. Between the panels, hooked scroll figures in cream and gray and small quartered squares repeat on the red ground. Near-black blocks flank the column beside each panel, holding red hooked shapes and small checked squares in camel and plum. The main border is terracotta, carrying splendid gray cartouches set with pink and violet stars, spiral hooks and small orange combs. Narrow guard stripes of deep red, set with small orange diamonds, run inside the border. The pile is full across the panels and the near-black blocks. In a long passage, the warm camel panels break up the strong red line. At 3'10" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a 16th-century carpet from the shrine of Shaikh Safi at Ardabil, the dynastic shrine of the Safavid shahs. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. Runners and other long formats are common. This runner keeps that geometric character in its stepped panels and hooked figures. Camel panels sit in a column on the red ground, and the near-black blocks set strong contrast against the red.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
