About this rug

This amazing rug has a column of three diamond medallions linked by narrow bars. The deep red field holds a column of three diamond medallions linked by narrow bars. Navy and cream motifs fill each diamond core, while hooked navy forms flank the central axis on the open ground. The splendid main border is cream, carrying large palmettes and hooked figures in terracotta, rose and navy. A narrow navy band with small red blossoms runs inside it. Full pile covers the face, and the red ground stays rich. It suits a long passage where the strong red line leads the eye forward without crowding the space. At 3'5" by 10'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. In 1913 the rugs of its district sold under three names: Sultanabad, Savalan, after a range of mountains to the north, and Mahal. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. The result is a wide field, plenty of space between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This runner keeps that generous spacing, letting the red ground breathe around the central column of diamonds. Its palette is stronger than the soft one named above, deep red and navy against a cream border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
