About this rug

The cream main border of this lovely runner holds octagonal rosettes in red and blue. On a navy ground, charming hooked vines and small rosettes in red, orange and cream form a lattice so dense that the field reads deep red. No medallion interrupts the design, which runs the length of the runner. The main border is cream, with octagonal rosettes in red and blue set between stepped bands in red and navy. Camel guard stripes with a blue and red zigzag run along the inner and outer edges of the border. The pile is low in a few patches of the field, where the foundation shows, and full in the borders. The dense drawing holds the eye down a long passage, and the cream border lifts the navy ground. At 3'7" by 10'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that long shape, with the lattice repeating from end to end. Red and cream motifs stand out against the navy ground, and the border repeats its octagonal rosettes down both sides.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
