About this rug

This wonderful rug centers on a cream medallion with a teal core. Set in a deep red field, small flowers in slate blue and teal, with touches of orange and cream, repeat down the length. A handsome central cream medallion with a teal core outlined in orange sits on a slate blue lozenge, with a gorgeous peach pendant at the top and bottom. Large spandrels in slate blue and cream fill the four corners of the runner. The main border is slate blue, carrying small cream blossoms and orange marks. A narrow teal guard stripe with a fine orange line runs inside it on each side. Full pile covers the field. It grounds a passage with its warm red and steady slate blue frame. At 3'11" by 9'9", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, was the capital of Media and later the summer residence of the Achaemenid kings. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner is long and narrow, with a single medallion set among small repeating motifs. The slate blue border frames the red field and its teal and orange details.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
