Stepped hexagonal medallions line the deep red field of this charming rug. Set within a deep red field, five beautiful stepped hexagonal medallions run down the length of the runner. Each medallion holds a red core with small gold and brown geometric motifs, framed by a stepped outline in rust and dark blue. The field between the medallions is scattered with tiny cream and red diamond shapes. A splendid cream main border carries a bold zigzag pattern in rust, gray and red. Narrow guard stripes in deep red with small geometric repeats flank the main border on both sides. The pile is full across the field and borders. The warm red and gold tones suit a narrow passage. At 3'8" by 10'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ardabil rugs
The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Runners and long formats are common. This runner keeps the stepped medallion form and the strong contrast between the deep red field and the dark blue outlines. The five medallions repeat down the length rather than gathering at a single center, a layout suited to the long format. The cream border with its bold zigzag adds a bright frame to the dark red ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
