About this rug

Near-black octagonal medallions hold tan cores in this lovely rug. On a deep red field, two large octagonal medallions in near-black hold tan cores with small blue and red flowers. Handsome stepped pendants link the centers, and large tan and brown pieces fill the corners and the points between the medallions. The main border is brown, carrying graceful red rosettes and angular shapes, flanked by guard stripes of blue zigzags and narrow red lines. The pile is low in places, and the red reads paler through the center of the field. The open red field gives the two dark medallions room, and they hold the eye along a long passage. At 4'1" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a 16th-century carpet from the shrine of Shaikh Safi at Ardabil, the dynastic shrine of the Safavid shahs. High in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border, sits Ardabil. District weaving is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Long formats and runners are common. This piece keeps that strict geometry, with bold octagons and sharp lines set against the red ground. It uses the long format, with two medallions stretched down the length in place of a single center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
