About this rug

The long cartouches of this charming runner each hold a striped red figure. Red leaves, rosettes and lattice lines cover the near-black ground so closely that the field reads deep red, with blue and cream flower heads in rows between them. No medallion interrupts the drawing, which repeats the whole length. A wide border of muted peach pink carries a chain of long cartouches, each holding a striped red figure and joined by crossed stems. Narrow red guard stripes dotted with orange, cream and brown run alongside it. Several patches of the dark ground have worn thin, mostly toward the top. Pale floorboards show up the contrast between the deep red strip and its peach pink edges. At 3'5" by 9'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, noted that old Hamedan runners sometimes ran twenty feet or more in length. The Hamedan region of western Persia is ringed by hundreds of villages, and for generations they have sent their rugs into the city’s markets. A long, narrow shape is the local specialty, made to fit the corridors of houses there, and many of the finest vintage runners trace back to it. This one skips the medallion entirely. The lattice repeats along the full length, and the wide peach pink border sets a clear frame around the red and near-black center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
