About this rug

Camel and steel blue boteh cover this lovely runner from end to end. The deep red field holds a beautiful dense lattice of small boteh shapes in camel and steel blue. No central medallion breaks the all-over repeat, which runs from end to end. A dark brown main border carries a chain of dainty rosettes in cream and rose, with small blue blossoms between them. Narrow guard stripes in cream and blue frame the red ground on either side. The pile is low in places, and the red reads paler across the center where the weave shows through. It grounds a long passage, letting the deep red settle the space. At 3'7" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

The biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia in the late 19th century was the Ziegler company of Arak, the town then called Sultanabad. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field and a restrained palette as the shared character. This runner keeps that all-over field and the restrained palette, with small camel and steel blue boteh repeating in a tight lattice across the red.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
