About this rug

The deep red field of this lovely rug is filled with small brown and near-black motifs. Worked on a deep red field, rows of small brown and near-black motifs with teal centers repeat across the whole length. No medallion interrupts them. A beautiful cream main border carries angular figures and arrows in red, with touches of teal and brown. Near-black bands with red zigzags run inside and outside it, and thin teal and gold stripes mark the edges. A brown zigzag band edges the field itself. Pile runs low in spots across the field. The red ground fills a narrow passage, while the cream border keeps the edges light. At 3'9" by 11', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Central Persia’s Arak was known historically as Sultanabad, and the villages around it sent rugs to market under their own names. This runner has the all-over layout of the district, with small repeated motifs across the red field and no medallion. The cream border carries angular figures and arrows in red, and a few touches of teal.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
