About this rug

Near-black octagonal guls form two columns on this charming rug. Within a deep red field, two columns of handsome near-black octagonal guls run down the length, each holding cream, red and blue forms. Small diamond motifs in red and near-black sit between the larger emblems. The border is navy, carrying large red star rosettes with black diamond centers and angular hooked forms. Narrow guard bands of red and near-black diamonds flank the border, with finer stripes inside. The pile is worn low across the face, and the foundation shows through in places. The navy frame cools the red interior along a long passage. At 3'7" by 10'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

The Textile Museum in Washington names Sabzevar, Herat, Mashhad and Dorokhsh among the Khorasan cities cited as sources of fine carpets. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Ferdos lies in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, in the same weaving belt as Birjand and Mashhad. This runner has a repeating field with no single medallion, in a palette of red and navy. Its guls, from the Persian word for flower, are the tribal emblem, and two columns of them stand on the red ground inside the navy border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
