About this rug

Stepped diamond motifs stand in a column at the center of this lovely rug. At the center, a column of stepped diamond motifs runs down a deep red field, flanked by octagons outlined in near-black and filled with orange, cream and gray. There is no single medallion, only this repeating vertical plan that fills the length of the runner. The splendid main border is dark brown, carrying delicate rosettes and angular hooks in red, orange and gray. A narrow gray guard stripe with orange and red sawtooth points edges the field on both sides. The pile is full, with a few pale flecks in the field. Framed in dark brown, this runner lays a strong red line down a hall. At 3'1" by 10', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

The Textile Museum in Washington names Sabzevar, Herat, Mashhad and Dorokhsh among the Khorasan cities cited as sources of fine carpets. Khorasan has its classic carpets in those of Herat, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Ferdos lies in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, in the same weaving belt as Birjand and Mashhad. The rugs tend toward curvilinear drawing, with repeating floral fields rather than a single dominant medallion. This runner keeps the repeating field and has no single medallion. Its octagons and stepped diamonds stand out on deep red inside a dark brown border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
