This remarkable rug holds three cream cross-shaped medallions down the center. The deep red field holds three cream cross-shaped medallions running down the center. Each medallion holds a near-black core inside a brown star, with stepped edges. Near-black spandrels fill the corners at both ends, set with dainty cream rosettes and angular orange details. The main border runs near-black, carrying red squares, cream rosettes and rust arrows. A narrow cream zigzag guard stripe edges the border. The pile is full from end to end. The dense drawing holds the warm red and cream in sharp contrast along the length. At 3'1" by 9'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Saveh rugs
The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds paintings by Habiballah of Sava, an older spelling of Saveh, who worked in the years around 1590 to 1610. An English consul named Abbott, who passed through Saveh in 1849, called it the most ruinous town he had ever seen. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. This runner keeps those straight-edged medallions, stacked three deep down the field. The palette is warm, built on madder red with cream alongside, seen here in the deep red ground and the cream medallions.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
