About this rug

Tight diagonal rows of small boteh make this a lovely rug. Small boteh in near-black and peach cover the deep red field in tight diagonal rows. No central medallion breaks the repeat, which runs down the entire length of the rug. The beautiful main border is cream, set with angular hooked forms in red and near-black, with small touches of teal. Narrow guard stripes in near-black carry a zigzag line and a row of small cream crosses. The pile is low in places through the middle of the field, and white flecks mark the thin spots. It grounds a narrow passage, the near-black motifs keeping the red from feeling too loud. At 3'1" by 9'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Botteh rugs

The shawls of the Scottish town of Paisley were so prominent on the market that the boteh has been called the paisley ever since. The Jacquard loom, invented in 1801, was first used in Paisley in the 1820s and made shawls in the boteh pattern cheaper to weave. Botteh names a motif, not a place. Rugs cataloged this way carry the boteh as their organizing figure, repeated in rows across the field. This runner retains that figure in diagonal rows across the red ground. The cream border frames the field with a bold geometric line, and the compact drawing suits the long format.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
