The three stepped medallions of this charming rug run down its length. Over a deep red field, three stepped medallions run down the length, outlined in gold and cream. Each has a brown center with a small central lozenge, and tiny pink and green flowers sit within the stepped outline. Cream T-shaped figures stand in the red spaces beside the medallions. The handsome main border runs red and near-black, with diagonal bands dotted in cream. A thin cream line separates the field from the border. The pile has worn low over most of the face. It anchors a long hall with red, gold and brown, and the cream figures give the near-black bands some light. At 3'3" by 9'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This runner repeats three stepped medallions in gold and cream down a red field, with cream T-shaped figures at their sides. Its border carries near-black diagonal bands on red.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
