Camel and near-black stepped diamond guls fill the deep red field of this lovely rug. Rows of beautiful stepped diamond guls in camel and near-black sit across the deep red field. Small dark motifs fill the open ground between these larger geometric shapes. The field is an all-over repeat with no central medallion to break the long rhythm. A wide border runs near-black, filled with red geometric crosses inside diamond frames. Narrow guard stripes in camel carry a small zigzag pattern along the inner and outer edges. The pile is low in places across the field, where scattered pale flecks show. The dark border frames this runner as a strong red line down a hall. At 3'6" by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Their palette is the darkest in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This runner keeps that dark palette in its near-black border and dark drawing, with a handful of motifs repeated down the length. The clear deep red field gives them a warm ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
