About this rug

Octagonal guls repeat in rows down a deep red field on this wonderful rug. At the center, rows of octagonal guls repeat down a deep red field, linked by thin dark lines. Each gul holds a stepped cross in cream, brown and dark blue, while small checkered diamonds fill the red space between them. There are no corner pieces, so the pattern runs to the very edge of the field. A handsome burgundy main border carries black geometric forms and small cream marks, framed by an outer band of dark brown triangles. Narrow guard stripes in cream and red sit along the inner edge. Full pile covers the face, leaving the geometric drawing crisp and the colors strong. It suits a narrow passage, where the dark red and repeating figures lead the eye along the floor. At 4'2" by 9'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Their palette is the darkest in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps that habit in its rows of octagonal guls and the small diamonds between them, all worked from a short list of shapes. The red ground is brighter than the darkest Baluch palette, and it stands out against the dark centers of the guls.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
