About this rug

This lovely rug carries large flower heads and buds in red, cream and pink in its main border. A handsome herati lattice in green, navy and cream, the fish-and-leaf design, fills the deep red field. A cream floral medallion with a red rosette core sits inside a long pointed hexagon with a sawtooth edge. Cream corner pieces of red and blue blossoms fill the spaces outside it. The main border has a very dark burgundy ground and carries large flower heads and buds in red, cream and pink. A brown guard stripe of small rosettes and a fine dotted line run inside it. Wear shows at the lower end and in parts of the cream corners; elsewhere the pile is mostly full. It anchors a hall with strong red and a dark frame, and the cream medallion lifts the middle of the length. At 4'3" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hamedan sits in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This runner follows that tradition and adds a clear middle. The cream medallion and the pointed hexagon around it give the long field a center, with the lattice running out above and below.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
