About this rug

Geometric rosettes and small hooked shapes in a lattice of near-black lines make this an amazing rug. Geometric rosettes and small hooked shapes fill the deep red field, set in a lattice of near-black lines. A beautiful cream diamond medallion rests in the middle, holding a red flower core and short pendants at the top and bottom. Cream spandrels with red and near-black figures sit in each corner of the field. The main border is burgundy, carrying a chain of small cream and near-black motifs along its length. A cream zigzag guard stripe runs inside the border, and a thin near-black stripe frames the outer edge. The pile is full, and the red reads paler across the upper field. The dense drawing keeps the long red shape steady, and the cream medallion gives the eye a place to rest. At 4'5" by 10', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hosseinabad rugs

Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Several generations ago many of these rugs were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hosseinabad is a village name that appears across the Hamedan weaving country of western Persia. The drawing is geometric with a large central figure. These are plain-spoken village rugs. This rug has that geometric drawing and a large central figure in its cream diamond, with matching cream corners and a lattice across the red field. The red ground and the cream medallion carry the whole design.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
