A central diamond medallion with tall bouquet pendants stands in the middle of this amazing rug. Sprays of pink, cream and navy blossoms cover the deep red field, set wide apart around a central diamond medallion. The medallion holds a small floral core in navy and pink, with tall bouquet pendants above and below. Large cream spandrels with scalloped navy edges fill the four corners, carrying flower sprays in coral, blue and teal. The main border is navy, set with a lovely chain of coral diamonds that hold teal centers. Camel guard stripes with small teal and rose flowers run on both sides of the border. The pile is full. It holds a long passage together, the red warming the floor while the cream ends give the drawing room. At 4'8" by 10'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. The result is a wide field with plenty of space between the motifs. This rug keeps that open spacing, the flower sprays standing apart on the red ground. The navy border of coral diamonds frames the field with a steady line.

Full care guideReturns

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
