About this rug

A chain of long cartouches outlined in red runs through the violet main border of this wonderful rug. Navy vines cross a deep red field to form a gorgeous lattice of diamonds, with small rosettes in cream and navy at the crossings and curled leaves set between them. The plan is allover, so the lattice carries on to the guard stripes at both ends. The main border has a violet ground, and it holds a chain of long cartouches outlined in red, with hooked devices between them. Narrow guard stripes of small blocks, one red and one tan, flank it. The pile is full across the field and the border. It brings a steady red warmth to a long passage, and the dainty navy vines keep the field lively. At 4'4" by 11'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Hamedan lies in western Persia, where hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, and this runner is made for exactly that kind of space. Instead of a medallion, one lattice of vines runs the whole length, so the plan reads the same from the doorway to the far end. The violet cast in the border is the coolest note against all that red, a small departure that gives the long format a frame.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
