About this rug

Diamond shapes and floral clusters repeat across the ground of this delightful rug. Pretty scrolling vines, palmettes and small blossoms in cream, rust and dark blue spread across the deep red field. No single medallion holds the center; instead, diamond shapes and floral clusters repeat along the length across the ground. The corners share that dense drawing, reaching the inner guard stripes without distinct spandrels. The main border is deep red, with small rose and teal flowers, set between navy and teal stripes. Full pile covers the face, keeping the fine drawing clear. It anchors a narrow passage, where the warm ground lets the cream and blue accents show. At 4'3" by 10'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. In 1913 the rugs of its district sold under three names: Sultanabad, Savalan, after a range of mountains to the north, and Mahal. Woven in the villages around Arak in central Persia, Mahal rugs were large and open from the start. They have a wide field, generous spacing between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This rug keeps that open spacing, letting the floral motifs breathe across the long format. Rather than the softer palettes often seen in Mahal rugs, this deep red ground sets the cream and dark blue drawing in clear contrast.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
