About this rug

Small boteh in pink and cream surround a central chain of three linked diamonds on this delightful rug. Across a deep red field, small boteh in pink and cream and slender sprigs surround a central chain of three linked diamonds. The chain sits on a near-black ground and is outlined in lavender, with cream and pink cores. A black diamond rosette in orange and cream marks each end of the field, and handsome dark stepped corner pieces fill the field corners at both ends. The beautiful main border has a dark burgundy ground carrying a cream key meander, its hooks filled with red and orange. Narrow gray brown guard stripes with tiny crosses edge the border on both sides. The pile is full over the field and the borders. It grounds a long passage with its red field and dark center. At 3'9" by 12'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Hamedan has had many names: Hangmatana or Agbatana to the Medes, and Ecbatana to the Greeks. It is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that long format, with a single chain of linked diamonds down the middle. The chain is one connected figure, and the cream key meander on a dark burgundy border frames it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
