A column of broad violet leaf shapes runs down the middle of this amazing rug. A deep red field is crowded with small hooked figures and fine lattice lines. Broad violet leaf shapes run down the middle in a column, with a few of them in burgundy. Beaded octagons sit between them, and small gold devices add bright notes along the way. The gorgeous main border blends burgundy and violet, with squares and small figures rather than a continuous vine. Sawtooth guard bands with small triangles run on either side of it, and a black selvedge closes the edge. The pile keeps its full height from the field out to the selvedge. It holds a long passage together with one strong red, and the violet column gives the field a clear rhythm. At 3'5" by 11'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, was the capital of Media and later the summer residence of the Achaemenid kings. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. Rugs from the Hamedan district reach the market from hundreds of villages in western Persia. The long runner is one of its best known shapes, woven for the corridors of local houses. This one keeps those proportions. What sets it apart is the field: rather than a regular lattice, a column of violet leaf shapes marches down the center while small hooked figures crowd in around it. Up close it is busy, but from the far end of a passage the pattern holds a clear, steady rhythm.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
