About this rug

This remarkable rug has three stepped medallions on a deep red field. Small cream, green and red motifs plus a few stylized animals sit on the deep red field. Three stepped medallions run down the center. The middle one has a camel core with a cross form inside an indigo outline; the outer two have indigo bodies and orange cores. Handsome near-black spandrels at the four corners hold rows of small quadrupeds and comb shapes. The main border runs on an indigo ground, carrying linked forms in orange, camel, pink and cream. Thin brown and cream guard stripes edge this strip, with a row of small triangles on the field side. The pile is full. Indigo and camel contrast with the bright red field to form a bold line. At 3'5" by 10', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. The long narrow shape of this rug is the Hamedan format. Stylized animals sit in the corners and across the field, and three stepped medallions run down its center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
