About this rug

Cream corner pieces, each holding a red and orange blossom, close the field at both ends of this amazing runner. A beautiful herati lattice of dark green and navy lines covers a burgundy field. Curled cream and gray leaf pairs and small orange and gold flower diamonds sit between the lines. Cream corner pieces, each holding a red and orange blossom, close the field at both ends. The rust main border carries small rosettes in navy, pink and cream, alternating with lovely arrow-shaped leaves on a thin dark stem. Navy and red guard stripes with pink zigzags and dotted lines run along both edges. Full pile covers every part of the runner, with no worn patches. It suits a hall with pale walls, where warm burgundy and rust sit beside cream corners that catch the light. At 3'9" by 10'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hosseinabad rugs

Hamedan, the market city for the villages around it, is built partly on the mound of Ecbatana, the capital of Media, founded by Greek account around 678 BCE. Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Hosseinabad is a village name that appears across the Hamedan weaving country of western Persia. The drawing there is geometric and built around a large central figure. This runner steps away from that, with no central figure at all. The herati repeat runs from one end of the field to the other, closed at each end by a pair of cream corner pieces. The village rugs of this area are plain-spoken. This one keeps that direct manner, with a single repeat laid out in burgundy, rust and cream.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
