About this rug

Two lobed medallions with navy cores anchor this lovely rug. On a burgundy field, pretty scrolling vines and flower heads in cream, navy and deep red fill the length. Two large lobed medallions anchor the design, each holding a navy core surrounded by cream palmettes. The field between them carries smaller rosettes and curling leaves. A gorgeous navy main border runs a scroll of cream blossoms and red vines. Narrow guard stripes in cream and red run along both edges of the border. Pile is low across much of the field, and the foundation shows in scattered patches. Cream motifs break up the dark red, making this runner a warm line down a passage. At 3'7" by 9'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardakan rugs

Ardakan is a town in Yazd province in central Persia. In the city of Yazd each district is built on its own qanat, an underground channel that carries water in from the mountains. The sacred fire in the Zoroastrian temple of Yazd is believed to have been burning since the 5th century. Ardakan’s weaving follows the central Persian pattern, a medallion field worked in curved lines, in a palette that stays on the warm side. This runner keeps that curved medallion form and the warm burgundy ground. The pair of medallions extends down the long format. The navy border adds a cool frame to the dense red field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
