Paired deep red panels and stepped crosses make this a remarkable rug. At the center, a column of paired deep red panels alternates with stepped crosses on a near-black burgundy field. Each panel has a cream outline and a small cream diamond at its heart, and small red diamonds and combs fill the ground between. The handsome main border is deep red, with cream hooked lines around near-black cores. Narrow guard stripes in red and near-black flank it. Full pile covers the whole runner. It grounds a narrow passage in deep red, with the near-black burgundy holding the small figures together. At 3'11" by 9'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Their palette runs to aubergine, deep madder and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This runner keeps that deep palette in red and near-black burgundy, with cream picking out the drawing. The panel and the stepped cross are the two forms, and each repeats from end to end.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
