About this rug

Rows of stepped gul motifs in cream and rust make this an amazing rug. Set within a burgundy field, rows of gorgeous stepped gul motifs in cream and rust repeat down the length, separated by small gold crosses. The pattern runs end to end as an all-over grid, with no single focal point gathering the design. The burgundy shifts toward brighter red in bands down the length. A beautiful cream border carries a chain of geometric forms in teal, rust and brown. Thin guard bands in dark brown and teal frame the field along both edges. Full pile covers the face, and the drawing stays sharp. It grounds a long passage, the pale edging lifting the weight of the red field. At 3'10" by 9'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

The reds of Turkmen weaving came from madder root, and each tribe had its own gul. Tekke rugs are the most easily identified of the Turkmen, because the quartered gul of their larger carpets became something of a trademark and was often copied elsewhere. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, and it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This runner keeps that strict grid and the single repeated figure, set against the burgundy ground. The cream and gold notes lift each figure clearly out of the dark field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
