About this rug

Rows of brown octagonal guls run down the burgundy field in this lovely rug. On a burgundy field, rows of splendid brown octagonal guls repeat down the full length, each holding a pale core with a small geometric figure. No single medallion anchors the design; the pattern runs the full length. A blue border carries pretty rust rosettes and small stepped diamonds, framed by narrow guard stripes of brown zigzag and thin red lines. Pile runs low across much of the field, with white specks showing through, most of all through the middle. It settles along a passage, and the blue border cools the warm field. At 3'11" by 9'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

The Textile Museum in Washington names Sabzevar, Herat, Mashhad and Dorokhsh among the Khorasan cities cited as sources of fine carpets. Khorasan has its classic carpets in those of Herat, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In eastern Persia’s Khorasan region, Ferdos shares a weaving belt with Birjand and Mashhad. This runner repeats its guls in rows down the whole length, with no central medallion. The drawing is angular and geometric, set on a burgundy ground inside a blue border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
