About this rug

Stepped lozenges run in a column down this charming rug. At the center, a column of five stepped lozenges runs down a near-black burgundy field scattered with small geometric flowers in red and orange. The lozenges are cream or olive, each with a red core and a serrated edge, while large cream panels at each end hold pretty brown vines. The main border is a wide band of red and olive zigzag triangles with orange and cream touches, set between narrow dark stripes. The pile is full across the face and borders. Deep red and bright cream meet in a warm, graphic pattern made for a narrow space. At 3'7" by 9'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that long shape, with a column of bold diamonds down the center. The large cream panels at the ends break the dark ground, framing the column with a lighter, open drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
