About this rug

Large blossoms in turquoise, red, orange and gray blue fill the ivory border of this lovely rug. Rows of boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, cover the field in red and rust with a cream dotted outline, set on a deep indigo ground that shows between them. Seen from a distance, the field appears burgundy. It is an all-over repeat, with no central medallion. A wide ivory main border carries large blossoms in turquoise, red, orange and gray blue, linked by charming dark vines. Burgundy guard bands edge the field and the outer edge. The pile is low in patches through the field and along the lower border, where the foundation shows. It anchors a narrow passage, and the turquoise notes cool the red. At 3'6" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. The long narrow shape suits it. Its field is a close repeat of boteh in strict rows, and the ivory border sets the red and blue off with bright blossoms.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
