An all-over herati lattice in burgundy and cream makes this a charming rug. A burgundy and cream herati lattice repeats down a navy ground, with no single medallion at the center. Small diamonds and curled leaves carry the all-over repeat from end to end. Beautiful red corner pieces with small cream curls fill the angled ends of the field. A handsome red main border carries round flowers in cream, light blue, teal and plum between camel zigzag bands. A red sawtooth stripe and thin navy lines edge the border on each side. The pile is worn low down the middle of the field, where the foundation shows through. It brings a long line of warm red and cool blue into a narrow space. At 3'3" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps the long format, with the herati lattice filling the field from end to end. The navy ground contrasts with the drawing, while camel bands give the red border a steady rhythm.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
