Hooked forms in a dense lattice cover this charming rug. Deep red hooked forms and small rosettes in cream and teal fill the burgundy field in a dense lattice, with near-black showing between them. The drawing repeats across the whole length, and no medallion interrupts it. A beautiful cream main border carries stepped tree-like motifs in red, teal, blue and brown. Narrow guard stripes in camel, red and near-black frame the border on each side. Pile is full over the face and the edges. It grounds a passage, the near-black spaces steadying the bright red drawing. At 2'11" by 9'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, noted that old Hamedan runners sometimes ran twenty feet or more in length. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner has that long narrow format, with its pattern repeating down the whole length. The red drawing stands out against the near-black spaces, and the cream border sets the whole field apart.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
