About this rug

This wonderful runner holds a lattice of fine cream lines on a burgundy field. Worked on a burgundy field, a lattice of fine cream lines holds small flowers in pink, navy and green. A central cream diamond medallion carries a lovely red floral rosette, with a navy and pink star flower above and below it. Cream spandrels sit at each corner of the field, set with charming red and pink scrolls. The main border is deep red, with small pink, blue and cream motifs between sawtooth bands. Thin guard stripes of cream and navy sit on either side. The pile is full. It brings a warm red line to a passage, cooled by the small navy accents in the drawing. At 2'11" by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Alexander the Great gathered the Persian treasure and left it at Ecbatana, now Hamedan, in the keeping of his chief treasurer Harpalus. His closest friend Hephaestion died there in the autumn of 324 BCE. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner has one cream diamond at the center of its burgundy ground and a lattice of small flowers running the full length. Cream corners at each end close the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
